MSI Wind Box DE220

,
MSI Wind Box DE220CES 2010 was a huge event with enough tech to make even Steve Jobs a little stressed trying to see everything. With a show as big as CES and having as many products as the show floor did it was easy to miss some stuff. One thing many people passed over (unintentionally of course) was the Wind Box DE220 that MSI had teased early on before the show.

Well thankfully not everybody passed it over because we have the down low on this nettop. The Wind Box is a small form factor desktop PC sporting Pinetrail-D that comes with a variety of specs depending on what you want. Customers can get a wind Box with either a single core 1.66GHz Intel Atom D410 processor or a dual core 1.66GHz Atom D510 processor.

Regardless of which processor model you get your Wind Box will come with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 graphics, up to 4GB of RAM and up to 1TB of hard disk space. The Wind Box DE220 comes with the Windows 7 Home Premium OS as well as an optional 802.11b/g/n WiFi card.

The MSI Wind Box DE220 sports a compact, bookshelf ready design that measures 10.8-inches x 6.7-inches x 1.6-inches and looks to be compact enough to take up little space giving you a cleaner, less cluttered workspace. As of right now there is no word on pricing or even a launch date but Im sure people are already drooling over this product already.

How to stay up to date with AutoCAD

,
I have a treat for you today. Todays post is guest written by Ellen Finkelstein. She is the author of several AutoCAD books, including the AutoCAD 2008 Bible. Her latest, the AutoCAD 2009 Bible will be available soon. She has also written several books on PowerPoint and other topics. Here are some links to Ellens website and blogs.

Thanks Ellen for sharing with us.

How to stay up to date with AutoCAD

AutoCAD is a complex program and its crucial for your work. Obviously, the better you know how to use the program, the quicker and more accurate your drawings will be. This is where the importance of education comes in.

Education has two parts:

  • Learning more about the base AutoCAD features that you use, or could use.
  • Keeping up with new releases as they come out

Some organizations upgrade only every few years. I sometimes get e-mails from people who are upgrading from R14 to R2008! But many upgrade every two or three years, which means that education is a regular feature of the job.

Autodesk has a subscription program in which you pay an annual fee and automatically get every new release. Additional benefits are "extensions" (new features released between major releases), e-learning tools, and Web-based support. While companies on the subscription program get each release as it comes out, they dont necessarily install and use it. But they generally upgrade more often than companies not on the subscription program. Even with the e-learning tools, retraining becomes a feature of life.

How can you learn as much as possible about AutoCAD and also keep up with new releases?

Basic learning resources

When you first learn AutoCAD, it may be from your dealer, from a book, or from on-the-job training. But its never enough. Why?

  1. You forget a lot of what you learned, because you dont use it every day.
  2. New tasks arise and you need to discover the best method of completing them.
  3. Theres always pressure to be more competitive, which completing tasks more quickly. Therefore, you need to regularly incorporate new customization and automizing techniques.
  4. Problems arise, whether due to the melding of drawings from many sources, network issues, having to incorporate multiple software applications, etc.

Here are some resources when you need to learn a new feature, answer a thorny question, or just find a better way:

  1. Your peers: If others in your organization use AutoCAD, ask them first. They may have figured out what you need to know.
  2. Books: Always have a good reference book on hand. The answer may be as simple as looking in the index or table of contents. (Shameless plug: Look on the right for links to my books.)
  3. Discussion groups: The Autodesk AutoCAD discussion group is very active and will often give you an answer within an hour or two.
  4. User groups: There are many AutoCAD user groups around the country and the world. Go to AUGI (Autodesk User Groups International) to search for the one nearest you. Their site is also a great source of support.
  5. Courses: Many colleges, especially community colleges, offer courses in AutoCAD. The schedules are often geared around working people, so you can take them in the evenings or on weekends. Bonus: The teacher and other students can become a permanent networking resource. You can also purchase video courses.
  6. Events: Autodesk University (annually) and CAD camps (several times a year) are great learning opportunities that offer classes specialized by discipline.
  7. Newsletters: Several newsletters, including mine (AutoCAD Tips Newsletter), offer regular tips, techniques, and articles. Subscribe!
  8. Web sites: There are loads of Web sites, too many to mention. Just start searching and youll find many. They have free code to download, free tips, and lots more.

Updating your skills

There are several things you can do to specifically help you with new releases. Most of these are time-dependent, matching the cycle of the new software:

  1. Beta programs: You can apply to participate in the AutoCAD beta program, which evaluates the software before its finalized. You need to have some time to commit to this, as youre usefulness is related to the amount of testing you do and comments you submit. Youll learn the new features before they go to market, giving you a jump on the training process.
  2. Upgrade training: Most dealers offer upgrade training for each release. Ask your dealer about it.
  3. New feature articles: Just after a new release comes out, many sites and newsletters publish a description of the new features. For example, you can find my list of 2009 new features here.
  4. If youre a subscription member, youll have access to e-learning content for the new release.

Succeeding in the AutoCAD world means being a perpetual learner. Hopefully, this list will help you find the best learning tools.

Product Review the Pogo Plug

,
The Pogo Plug

The Pogo Plug is a very simple device that is easy to use and inexpensive to run.  It is a device and a service all in one that helps you create a personal cloud.  “Cloud” is a common buzz word these days in technology.  Put simply, “the cloud” is online storage.  Instead of keeping your files on your computer (desktop, laptop, netbook, tablet, mobile device) they are kept in “the cloud.”  This gives you access to your files on any device from anywhere.  The Pogo Plug from Cloud Engines (based in San Francisco, California, U.S.A.) provides this for you.  There are several models each of which provides the same basic cloud service.  Purchase the Pogo Plug model that suits your needs, set it up and start computing in the cloud.  No monthly fees, no service charges, nothing except for the one time purchase of the device.  This was one of the biggest selling points for me.  Yes I have a Pogo Plug and I love it.  It isn’t perfect of course, nothing is, but it does what I need it to and more.

Services

The Pogo Plug provides three main services:  remote access to files, file sharing, and live streaming.  There are a few more services but these are the three main reasons to get a Pogo Plug.

Once set up, the Pogo Plug gives you access to your files through an internet connection.  The Pogo Plug needs to be hooked in to your internet access from home (or small business, church, little league, etc.)  Once installed users can gain access either through an internet browser or through one of Pogo plug’s free downloadable applications.  There are two types of applications; for the desktop and for a mobile device.  You name the operating system and they have an application that applies.  It can be installed on Windows (XP, Vista, and 7 in either 32 or 63 bit), Linux and MAC OS.  They also have it available on mobile devices for iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows Mobile and WebOS.  Like I said, you name it they make it.  The people at Pogo Plug want you to be able to access your files.

File access

This is the Pogo Plug’s main feature.  It is very simple.  Install your Pogo Plug and add a USB drive to it.  Everything on that drive is shared.  It is shared to whomever you give the username and password to.  Download the software to your computer to access the files as a regular drive.  You can’t assign a drive letter to it, but it seems to typically use the letter P (on windows anyway.)  If you have more than one drive installed on your Pogo Plug you can have the Pogo Plug use one drive letter or have it assign a drive letter to each storage device.  It’s up to you.  Access is a little slow but remember, it’s all happening through the internet.  Your computer has to through it to send/pull files then the Pogo Plug has to do the same, so don’t get in a hurry.  You don’t have to use the downloaded software to access your files.  You can go through a browser to download files to your computer.

File Sharing

File sharing is a nice feature from the Pogo Plug.  You can’t share files unless you go through the web browser on the computer.  Browse to your file, select it, then click the Share This button.  Enter in the email address of the person you want to share it with.  A link to the file is sent to them and they will be able to download it.  You can provide access to single files or to folders.  This is a great way to collaborate with others if you are working on a project together.

Live Streaming

Like music?  Have a big collection?  You can stream your music through your computer or mobile device.  You can also stream pictures or videos.

Other Services

These services are the icing on the cake, for me anyway.  The Pogo Plug has the ability to view PDF and Office files.  It can’t edit them but it can view them.  It also has Social Media integration.  You can upload files from your Pogo Plug to Facebook, Twitter, My Space, etc.  Two of the biggest bonus features are Remote Printing and Active Copy.  Hook up a printer to your Pogo Plug and you can print any files in your Pogo Plug to your printer from anywhere!  If you receive a file via email, save it to your Pogo Plug and print it even from your mobile device.  The Active Copy is the feature that sold me on the Pogo Plug.  It will automatically back up your Pogo Plug files to where ever you tell it to.  You tell it which folders to back up and where to back them up to.  If you are running the Pogo Plug software on your computer it will copy any folder from your computer to the Pogo Plug.  I set up each of my family members computers to copy their My Documents Folders to a folder on my Pogo Plug.  Since I set up two external hard drives on the Pogo Plug we use one for active files and the other as a backup.  It’s a real-time backup that is nothing more than a copy of the files.  Having recently lost files to a hard drive failure this was a win win for me.

Installation

The Pogo Plug is simple to install.  Plug it in to your router/modem and activate it through their website.  Plug in a USB hard drive or thumb drive (up to four devices) and you are good to go.  You can also install a USB connected printer to it as well.  It does not install to your computer at all.  That means you don’t have to have your computer on to run it, just the Pogo Plug itself and any drives you have installed to it.

Cost

What does all of this cost?  Once you purchase your Pogo Plug it’s all yours.  None of the services cost anything.  The only additional cost will be to purchase external drives and your internet service.  There are three types of Pogo Plugs, each with a different cost and each providing slightly different services.  There is the Pogo Plug (regular), Pro and Biz.  The Pogo Plug is $99 (U.S.D.), the Pro is $99 and the Biz is $299.  The regular and Pro Pogo Plugs are identical except the Pro has a built in Wifi Adapter.  The Biz has the ability to add multiple users, customizations, custom email addresses, usage statistics and Web Only sharing.  If you are a business and need these features then the extra price is worth it.

Conclusion

The Pogo Plug is a great device for remote file access and sharing.  It is inexpensive and easy to use.  It has a few drawbacks, like speed and lack of drive letter assignment, but its active copy, remote printing, and file sharing tools may be enough for you to offset these drawbacks.  I would recommend this device to anyone needing a simple and inexpensive means to accessing your files.  Especially for home office use or for small groups that need to share files.

Apple Blocks Official Google Voice App for iPhone

,

Apple and/or AT&T are blocking the Official Google Voice Application for the iPhone from their App Store as well as pulled some unofficial Google Voice apps that were previously approved! This is a bold move that many iPhone users feared because it offered free incoming and outgoing text messages. There are still Official Google Voice Apps for Blackberries and Androids... but for the immediate future, iPhones are SOL!

Google Voice iPhone Application

Earlier today we learned that Apple had begun to pull all Google Voice-enabled applications from the App Store, citing the fact that they “duplicate features that come with the iPhone”. Now comes even worse news: we’ve learned that Apple has blocked Google’s official Google Voice application itself from the App Store. In other words, Google Voice — one of the best things to happen to telephony services in a very long time — will have no presence at all on the App Store. If there’s ever been a time to be furious with Apple, now is it.

Pirated Software Value is On the Rise

,

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) stated in their annual report that the revenue from software piracy in 2010 has reached record highs. The alliance stated that piracy worldwide is now costing the industry $59 billion. They also said that it seems as though the piracy is primarily occurring in emerging markets where PC growth is taking place.

In terms of piracy rates according to region, the central/eastern regions of Europe and South and Central America ranked the highest. The regions all tied at 64 percent. The BSA said that the commercial value of software piracy has grown 14 percent in a mere year.

The BSA represents the entire software industry. BSA president and chief executive Robert Holleyman said in a statement, “The software industry is being robbed blind. Nearly $59 billion worth of products were stolen last year — and the rates of theft are completely out of control in the worlds fastest-growing markets. The irony is people everywhere value intellectual property rights, but in many cases they dont understand they are getting their software illegally."

The BSA reported that the global market for personal computers skyrocketed in 2010. As PCMag puts it, “for the first time, PC shipments to emerging economies outpaced those to mature markets, 174 million to 173 million.”

The BSA stated that “the problem is that people often do not realize the software they are using is illegal.” The BSA found that the most common form of piracy that was found in the emerging economies was when an individual would buy a single copy of software and then install it onto multiple computers. They also found that businesses were doing this as well. The organization discovered that an entire fifty-one percent of PC users (including businesses) in these emerging markets did not realize that installing a single copy of software onto multiple computers was illegal. A BSA spokeswoman said that they obtained all of this information from Ipsos and IDC. She also said that Ipsos surveyed more than 15,000 different consumer and business PC users to get the best possible picture of the “software load” per PC.

I don’t think that it is surprising that the piracy rates have gone up. Now, I’m not saying that its right by any means. There is no gray area when it comes to piracy. It’s simply illegal, but with the economy in the state that it is, there really isn’t any extra cash floating around to buy multiple copies of software when you can really just use one. I’m not saying its right, but it does make sense that the rates are setting records.

Hire A Reliable Company For Hard Drive Shredding

,
By Mia Kent

If you are looking for a hard drive shredding Austin, here are the things that you should consider. The background of the company is important. It should be good. Check the background of the company to find out if they can be relied for the service. It should a reliable company. You do not want to deal with an incompetent company for the service.

Company information is confidential. It should not get into the hands of competitors. The information is highly protected because if they leak out, problems may start with the company. It is just like personal information about ones self. You do not want other people to know about information that is private to you especially if they are strangers.

The company should choose a company that can be trusted. Companies that are providing the service are aplenty. However, this does not mean that they can all be trusted for the service. You need a company that can protect your interest in the service. The employees of the company must also be of good professional and moral background.

There are many companies providing the service but you are only going to hire one. You cannot possibly choose a company without knowing some information about them. Check the background of the companies. They should be good companies in the industry.

Talk to the company. Ask them how they could assure you that they have good people working for them. The people who they employ are the very people who will have hands on the store devices. You will be giving the store devices to them. They have the opportunity in the world to steal information from the company. They can give it to their competitors in exchange for money.

The storage capacity of the device is also limited. That is why companies update their storage devices. Sometimes they get to the point of actually replacing their unit. Files in the old unit are exported to the new one. Information can stay in the device even if you performed some usual deletions in them.

You will be put in a bad light in these people. Before they even have service with you, they already have a negative mental picture about your capability to handle the service. Companies should aspire to do well on their service because they can get recommended to other customers. Happy customers are willing to recommend their companies if they do a good job.

There is information that the company needs to protect. The information should not be able to find its way to their competitors. You can store any information into the storage device of a computer. There comes a time when it needs to be retired. That is what is happening here when you instruct a company to destroy these files.

There is additional information provided by the directory for the companies. It helps customers know more about the business of the company. If you want to contact a certain company these days, you will not have a hard time doing that. Contact information of a hard drive shredding Austin company is readily available on the internet. You can search for them.

Happy PI Day everyone!!!

,
Official PI Day Site

Wow, Id thought it would never get here!!! I learned about this festive day about 10 months ago and have looked forward to it ever since!! In America (where we look for any reason to party!!), the dating system has today as 3/14/2008. So, since 1988, every March the 14th, we have (Im not so sure what I mean by WE) celebrated PI Day. It is a day set aside to remember and appreciate all things PI, all things math, and all things, well, nerdy!! Why not? I for one am a man that is proud of his geekdom, proud of that fact that I can say some things in Klingon, and that I know PI to (3.14159265) eight digits!!! Put that on your resume!!

I have also convinced my boss to pie Pizza PIs for everyone in the office today in celebration!! Thanks Strickland, you rock!! (Do you think he reads my blog?)

So, have fun with it out there, and eat some PI for me!!!

p.s. the number PI is derived from the ratio of the diameter of a circle to its circumference.

Happy CADDING.

How To Pick The Right Project Management Software For Construction

,
By Catalina Nielsen

Having to construct any structure can be a very tiring procedure that consumes any like every resource of all the parties involved. Recent developments in machinery and knowledge, has however sought to ease up the work. This cannot be as easy as observed unless a keen look is taken at the program used to examine its performance in terms of speed and precision. Project management software for construction helps in making process easy.

The biggest hurdle in this business has been the continued use of outdated programs to run this kind of work. As the economy around the world begins to pick up again, it is important that the contractors find a viable solution to counter this challenge if they are to remain in business. Whereas technology is important, it highly depends on how a company decides to employ one. One should always ask themselves first if the program used has led them spend more time managing it or building. The following features mark a good program in this business.

It is essential that the program used be very effective and efficient in operation. One should look for a program that ensures effective channeling of information throughout the venture especially when an important instruction is being given. Ensuring that the system used is effective in reaching out to every party involved is therefore a big determiner.

There are also wireless tools that can be used for constant communication between workers in the field the office. All these are important in that, pictures and videos can be uploaded and shared among the participants for easier supervision and ensuring that everyone is on the same page. This saves a lot of time and money.

The system employed should be simple to operate. Coming up with a structure can be complicated. It is therefore important that one seeks to ease this by having a very straight forward managing tool. Luckily, many internet based tools have been found to be quite simple to handle. The application should consist of simple steps for workers to grasp easily on top of being simple to set up. In so doing, one ensures that people emphasize on the actual building rather than worry themselves with the tool.

On top of this, it is important that the system employed fits the requirement of the plan. Though recent software have been configured to include or features that any building process it is important that these features agree with the venture at hand. It should be cost friendly and deliver the expected benefits.

A good application only restricts time to the features that are necessary. This is ensured due the fact that every aspect of a good application can be customized to fit what the client requires only. This eliminates time spent on features that will be deemed useless to the individual or business. This is very important feature as every building is unique in its own way.

The security of the program is also very essential. The person selling the system to your company should have ensured that all matters security is well taken care of. Data should be well encrypted and the passwords strong enough. Project management software for construction is reliable.

Broadband made a legal right for Finnish citizens

,

Broadband made a legal right for Finnish citizens.
Let us be honest, how many of us are reading this article from our neighbors wifi? I, for one, am not, but that may or may not be because I’m the only one with internet in the building. The ethical argument for using another person’s wireless internet is akin to the argument about virtual property. Have we reached an age where a person can not only own the rights to something tangible, but something completely invisible as well? It is almost considered ignorant to go without internet anymore, but with bills for electric, cable, water, gas, and everything else piling up, it is becoming more and more difficult to add another forty dollars or so to our monthly spending. With social networking becoming more popular than postal mail, maybe the US should take a hint from Finland, and their new policy that internet should be a legal right to each and every person.
In October 2009 promises were being made by Finlands communication officials that by 2010 everyone would have broadband internet of at least 1Mbit/s, and by 2015 amping it up to 100Mbit/s. Finland makes this possible using ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line). As of July 2010 this promise came to fruition, and all of Finland had the option to be connected to the web. Even before this breakthrough in communication, certain cities in Finland, such as Oulu, were already offering city-wide internet access. Finland’s willingness to offer such a commodity for no cost to its general public may seem startling, but when one looks at the benefits to free internet, it is understandable why this step was taken.
According to Reuters, four out of five people believe that internet access is a fundamental right. For the older population this might seem hard to believe, since the internet has only become extremely popular in the last decade. Internet access has become such a crucial part of our everyday lives that it would be impossible for some businesses to function without it. In fact, some businesses are completely internet based, with nary a cubicle in sight. More and more people would benefit from open access internet, even to the point where it would open up jobs for people unable to leave their homes.
Americas attempts to jump start its economy are everywhere. New highways being built, new government-run jobs opening up, the evidence is obvious that drastic steps are being taken to put money back into the pockets of American citizens in hopes that said citizens will spend the money. By offering nationwide broadband access, online shopping would be available to every single citizen, not just the technically savvy. The factory worker that gets off work at 3:00am with a hole in his steel toed boots could jump on his computer, as basic as it might be, and order a new pair for delivery. No more worrying about waking up five hours early to get to the shoe store. The full time Mom could order all of her Christmas presents from home without having to dress and wash her numerous offspring. The possibilities are endless. For wireless intenet on the go consider an AirCard rental from Rentacomputer.com.

NET Interview Question

,

1. What is ASP.NET?
  ASP.NET is a server side scripting technology that enables scripts (embedded in web pages) to be executed by an Internet server.
       ASP.NET provides increased performance by running compiled code.

2. What is the difference between Classic ASP and ASP.Net?
  ASP is Interpreted language based on scripting languages like Jscript or VBScript.
                    ASP has Mixed HTML and coding logic.
                    Limited development and debugging tools available.
                    Limited OOPS support.
                    Limited session and application state management.
       ASP.Net is supported by compiler and has compiled language support.
                    Separate code and design logic possible.
                    Variety of compilers and tools available including the Visual studio.Net.
                    Completely Object Oriented.
                    Complete session and application state management.
                    Full XML Support for easy data exchange.

3. What is Difference between Namespace and Assembly?
  Namespace is a logical design-time naming convenience, whereas an assembly establishes the name scope for types at run time.

4. What is the difference between early binding and late binding?
  Calling a non-virtual method, decided at a compile time is known as early binding. Calling a virtual method (Pure Polymorphism), decided at a runtime is known as late binding.

5. What is the difference between ASP Session State and ASP.Net Session State?
  ASP session state relies on cookies, Serialize all requests from a client, does not survive process shutdown, Can not maintained across machines in a Web farm.

6. What is the difference between ASP Session and ASP.NET Session?
  Asp.net session supports cookie less session & it can span across multiple servers.

7. What is reflection?
  All .NET compilers produce metadata about the types defined in the modules they produce. This metadata is packaged along with the module (modules in turn are packaged together in assemblies), and can be accessed by a mechanism called reflection.
        The System.Reflection namespace contains classes that can be used to interrogate the types for a module/assembly.

8. What is the difference between Server.Transfer and response.Redirect?
  The Server.Transfer () method stops the current page from executing, and runs the content on the specified page, when the execution is complete the control is passed back to the calling page.
While the Response.Redirect () method transfers the control on the specified page and the control is never passed back to calling page after execution.

9. What is a PostBack?
  The process in which a Web page sends data back to the same page on the server.

10. What namespace does the Web page belong in the .NET Framework class hierarchy?
  System.Web.UI.Page

11. What’s a bubbled event?
  When you have a complex control, like DataGrid, writing an event processing routine for each object (cell, button, row, etc.) is quite tedious. The controls can bubble up their event handlers, allowing the main DataGrid event handler to take care of its constituents.

12. What is the differences between Server-side and Client-side code?
  Server-side code executes on the server.
        Client-side code executes in the client’s browser.

13. What is the difference between static or dynamic assemblies?
  Assemblies can be static or dynamic.
        Static assemblies can include .NET Framework types (interfaces and classes), as well as resources for the assembly (bitmaps, JPEG files, resource files, and so on). Static assemblies are stored on disk in portable executable (PE) files.(EXE)
        Dynamic assemblies, which are run directly from memory and are not saved to disk before execution. You can save dynamic assemblies to disk after they have executed.(DLL)

14. What are the difference between Structure and Class?
  Structures are value type and Classes are reference type
        Structures can not have constructor or destructors.
        Classes can have both constructor and destructors.
         Structures do not support Inheritance, while Classes support Inheritance.

15. What is the differences between dataset.clone and dataset.copy?
  Dataset.clone copies just the structure of dataset (including all the datatables, schemas, relations and constraints.); however it doesn’t copy the data.
For Example: Dataset.copy, copies both the dataset structure and the data.

16. What is the difference between Custom Control and User Control?
  Custom Controls are compiled code (Dlls), easier to use, difficult to create, and can be placed in toolbox. Drag and Drop controls. Attributes can be set visually at design time. Can be used by Multiple Applications (If Shared Dlls), Even if Private can copy to bin directory of web application add reference and use. Normally designed to provide common functionality independent of consuming Application.
User Controls are similar to those of ASP include files, easy to create, can not be placed in the toolbox and dragged - dropped from it. A User Control is shared among the single application files.

17. What is the difference between ASP Session State and ASP.Net Session State?
  ASP session state relies on cookies, Serialize all requests from a client, does not survive process shutdown, Can not maintained across machines in a Web farm.

18. What is ViewState?
  ViewState is a .Net mechanism to store the posted data among post backs. ViewState allows the state of objects to be stored in a hidden field on the page, saved on client side and transported back to server whenever required.

19. What is Authentication and Authorization?
  Authentication is the process of identifying users. Authentication is identifying/validating the user against the credentials (username and password) and Authorization performs after authentication.
 Authorization is the process of granting access to those users based on identity. Authorization allowing access of specific resource to user.

20. What are the types of Authentication?
  There are 3 types of Authentication. Windows, Forms and Passport Authentication.
        Windows authentication uses the security features integrated into the Windows NT and Windows XP operating systems to authenticate and authorize Web application users.
         Forms authentication allows you to create your own list/database of users and validate the identity of those users when they visit your Web site.
        Passport authentication uses the Microsoft centralized authentication provider to identify users. Passport provides a way to for users to use a single identity across multiple Web applications. To use Passport authentication in your Web application, you must install the Passport SDK.

21. What are the different types of Validation Controls?
  There are six types of validation controls available :
              RequiredFieldValidator
              RangeValidator
              RegularExpressionValidator
              CompareValidator
              CustomValidator
              ValidationSummary

22. What is the Web User Control?
  Combines existing Server and/or HTML controls by using VS.Net to create functional units that encapsulate some aspects of UI. Resides in Content Files, which must be included in project in which the controls are used.

23. What namespaces are necessary to create a localized application?
  System.Globalization
        System.Resources

24. How to Manage State in ASP.Net?
  There are several ways to manage a state.
              ViewState
             QueryString
             Cookies
             Session
            Application

25. What are the different types of Caching?
  There are three types of Caching :
              Output Caching: stores the responses from an asp.net page.
              Fragment Caching: Only caches/stores the portion of page (User Control)
              Data Caching: is Programmatic way to Cache objects for performance.
26. What is Side-by-Side Execution?
  The CLR allows any versions of the same-shared DLL (shared assembly) to execute at the same time, on the same system, and even in the same process. This concept is known as side-by-side execution.

27. How to view an assembly?
  We can use the tool "ildasm.exe" known as "Assembly Disassembler" to view the assembly.

28. Which are the namespaces that are imported automatically by Visual Studio in ASP.Net?
  There are 7 namespaces which are imported automatically.
                 System
                 System.Collections
                 System.IO
                 System.web
                 System.web.UI
                 System.web.UI.HTMLControls
                 System.web.UI.WebControls.

29. What are the layouts of ASP.NET Pages?
 .       GridLayout positions the form object on absolute x and y co-ordinates of the screen.
         FlowLayout positions the form objects relative to each other.

30. What is Delegates?
  Delegates are a type-safe, object-oriented implementation of function pointers and are used in many situations where a component needs to call back to the component that is using it. Delegates are generally used as basis of events, which allow any delegate to easily be registered for as event.

31. What is a Namespace? What is the use of a namespace?
  Namespaces are logical grouping of classes and other types in hierarchical structure.
         Namespaces are useful to avoid collision or ambiguity among the classes and type names.
         Another use of the namespace is to arrange a group of classes for a specific purpose.

32. What’s the difference between Codebehind="MyCode.aspx.cs" and Src="MyCode.aspx.cs"?
  Visual Studio uses the Codebehind attribute to distinguish the page source or programming logic from the design. Also the src attribute will make the page compile on every request. That is the page will not be compiled in advance and stored in the bin as a DLL instead it will be compiled at run time.

33. What is datagrid?
  The DataGrid Web server control is a powerful tool for displaying information from a data source. It is easy to use; you can display editable data in a professional-looking grid by setting only a few properties. At the same time, the grid has a sophisticated object model that provides you with great flexibility in how you display the data.

34. How do you hide the columns?
  One way to have columns appear dynamically is to create them at design time, and then to hide or show them as needed. You can do this by setting a column’s “Visible” property.

35. What are different types of directives in .NET?
  @Page
        @Control
        @Import
        @Implements
        @Register
        @Assembly
        @OutputCache
        @Reference

36. What data type does the RangeValidator control support?
  Integer
  String.
  Date.

37. What is cookies?
  Cookies are small pieces of text, stored on the client’s computer to be used only by the website setting the cookies. This allows webapplications to save information for the user, and then re-use it on each page if needed

38. How many classes can a single .NET DLL contain?
  It can contain many classes.

39. What methods are fired during the page load?
  Init() - when the page is instantiated.
        Load() - when the page is loaded into server memory.
        PreRender() - the brief moment before the page is displayed to the user as HTML.
        Unload() - when page finishes loading.

40. What is the difference between Value Types and Reference Types?
  Value Types uses Stack to store the data. where as Reference type uses the Heap to store the data.

41. What is the difference between Server-side scripting and Client-side scripting?
  Server side scripting means that all the script will be executed by the server and interpreted as needed. ASP doesnt have some of the functionality like sockets, uploading, etc.
        Client side scripting means that the script will be executed immediately in the browser such as form field validation, clock, email validation, etc. Client side scripting is usually done in VBScript or JavaScript.

42. How do you create a permanent cookie?
  Permanent cookies are available until a specified expiration date, and are stored on the hard disk.So Set the Expires property any value greater than DataTime.MinValue with respect to the current datetime. If u want the cookie which never expires set its Expires property equal to DateTime.maxValue.

43. Which method do you use to redirect the user to another page without performing a round trip to the client?
  Server.Transfer
         Server.Execute.

44. Which method do you use to redirect the user to another page without performing a round trip to the client?
  Server.transfer

45. What tag do you use to add a hyperlink column to the DataGrid?
  < asp:HyperLinkColumn > < / asp:HyperLinkColumn >

46. What is web.config file?
  Web.config file is the configuration file for the Asp.net web application. There is one web.config file for one asp.net application which configures the particular application. Web.config file is written in XML with specific tags having specific meanings.It includes database which includes connections,Session States,Error Handling,Security etc.

47. What is the difference between in-proc and out-of-proc?
  An Inproc is one which runs in the same process area as that of the client giving tha advantage of speed but the disadvantage of stability becoz if it crashes it takes the client application also with it.
Outproc is one which works outside the clients memory thus giving stability to the client, but we have to compromise a bit on speed.

48. What is a PostBack?
  The process in which a Web page sends data back to the same page on the server.

49. How many languages .NET is supporting now?
  When .NET was introduced it came with several languages. VB.NET, C#, COBOL and Perl, etc. The site DotNetLanguages.Net says 44 languages are supported.

50. What is smart navigation?
  The cursor position is maintained when the page gets refreshed due to the server side validation and the page gets refreshed.

51. How do you validate the controls in an ASP .NET page?
  Using special validation controls that are meant for this. We have Range Validator, Email Validator

52. How do you turn off cookies for one page in your site?
  Use Cookie.Discard property, Gets or sets the discard flag set by the server. When true, this property instructs the client application not to save the Cookie on the users hard disk when a session ends.

53. Which two properties are on every validation control?
  We have two common properties for every validation controls:
              Control to Validate
              Error Message
54. Which control would you use if you needed to make sure the values in two different controls matched?
  CompareValidator is used to ensure that two fields are identical.

55. What is the difference between HTTP-Post and HTTP-Get?
  The GET method creates a query string and appends it to the scripts URL on the server that handles the request.
        The POST method creates a name/value pairs that are passed in the body of the HTTP request message.

56. What is strong-typing versus weak-typing?
  Strong typing implies that the types of variables involved in operations are associated to the variable, checked at compile-time, and require explicit conversion
        Weak typing implies that they are associated to the value, checked at run-time, and are implicitly converted as required.

57. What is boxing and unboxing?
  Implicit conversion of value type to reference type of a variable is known as BOXING, For example integer to object type conversion.
        Conversion of reference type variable back to value type is called as UnBoxing.

58. What is garbage collection?
  Garbage collection is a system whereby a run-time component takes responsibility for managing the lifetime of objects and the heap memory that they occupy.

59. What is serialization?
  Serialization is the process of converting an object into a stream of bytes.
        Deserialization is the opposite process of creating an object from a stream of bytes.
        Serialization / Deserialization is mostly used to transport objects.

60. What is the differnce between Managed code and unmanaged code?
  Managed Code: Code that runs under a "contract of cooperation" with the common language runtime. Managed code must supply the metadata necessary for the runtimeto provide services such as memory management, cross-language integration, code access security, and automatic lifetime control of objects. All code based on Microsoft intermediate language (MSIL) executes as managed code.
        Un-Managed Code:Code that is created without regard for the conventions and requirements of the common language runtime. Unmanaged code executes in the common language runtime environment with minimal services (for example, no garbage collection, limited debugging, and so on).

61. What is difference between constants, readonly and, static?
  Constants: The value can’t be changed.
        Read-only: The value will be initialized only once from the constructor of the class.
        Static: Value can be initialized once.

62. What is namespace used for loading assemblies at run time and name the methods?
  System.Reflection

63. How big is the datatype int in .NET?
  32 bits

64. What is difference between abstract classes and interfaces?
  Abstract classes can have concrete methods while interfaces have no methods implemented.
Interfaces do not come in inheriting chain, while abstract classes come in inheritance.

65. In which event are the controls fully loaded?
  Page_load event guarantees that all controls are fully loaded. Controls are also accessed.
        In Page_Init events but you will see that viewstate is not fully loaded during this event.

66. What is the use of @ Register directives?
  @Register directive informs the compiler of any custom server control added to the page.

67. Define RequiredFieldValidator?
  It checks whether the control have any value. Its used when you want the control should not be empty.

68. What are the different types of Session state management options available with ASP.NET?
  ASP.NET provides In-Process and Out-of-Process state management. In-Process stores the session in memory on the web server. Out-of-Process Session state management stores data in an external data source. The external data source may be either a SQL Server or a State Server service. Out-of-Process state management requires that all objects stored in session are serializable.

69. What are the difference between const and readonly?
  A const can not be static, while readonly can be static.
A const need to be declared and initialized at declaration only, while a readonly can be initialized at declaration or by the code in the constructor.
       A const’s value is evaluated at design time, while a readonly’s value is evaluated at runtime.

70. How do you turn off cookies in one page of your asp.net application?
  We may not use them at the max, However to allow the cookies or not, is client side functionality.

71. What’s the difference between Response.Write () and Response.Output.Write()?
  Response.Outout.Write allows us to write the formatted out put.

72. What is the difference between inline and code behind?
  Inline code written along with the html and design blocks in an .aspx page.
       Code-behind is code written in a separate file (.cs or .vb) and referenced by the .aspx page.

73. What is the difference between early binding and late binding?
  Calling a non-virtual method, decided at a compile time is known as early binding.
        Calling a virtual method (Pure Polymorphism), decided at a runtime is known as late binding.

74. What is the difference between ASP Session and ASP.NET Session?
  Asp.net session supports cookie less session & it can span across multiple servers.

75. What is Common Language Runtime?
  CLR also known as Common Language Run time provides a environment in which program are executed, it activate object, perform security check on them, lay them out in the memory, execute them and garbage collect them.

76. What is Intermediate Language?
  MSIL are also known as Microsoft Intermediate Language is the CPU-independent instruction set into which .Net framework programs are compiled. It contains instructions for loading, storing initializing, and calling methods on objects.

104. How to compile C# program without Visual Studio?

        Using a state of the art software development environment might boost your productivity - at least if it’s measured in lines of code. However, to understand what is going on behind the scenes using the command line C# compiler csc may be the better choice. Consider this example resulting in a library A.dll and a client program B.exe that references it.
// A.cs
using System;
public sealed class A {
 A () {}
  public static void P () {
    Console.WriteLine("A.P");
  }
}
// B.cs
using System;
sealed class B {
  B () {}
  static void Main () {
    Console.WriteLine("B.Main");
    A.P();
    Console.ReadLine();
  }
}

To compile, save the above .cs files and run the following batch file.
REM make.bat

PATH C:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv1.1.4322
csc /checked /t:library A.cs
csc /checked /t:exe B.cs /r:A.dll
PAUSE

Note the /checked compiler option, which should be the default but unfortunately is not.

  A static variable’s life span is till the class is in memory

108. What is the difference between an abstract method & virtual method?
  An Abstract method does not provide an implementation and forces overriding to the deriving class (unless the deriving class also an abstract class),
        Virtual method has an implementation and leaves an option to override it in the deriving class. Thus Virtual method has an implementation & provides the derived class with the option of overriding it. Abstract method does not provide an implementation & forces the derived class to override the method.

  Compiler:
                       A compiler is a program that translates program (called source code) written in some high level language into object code.A compiler translates high-level instructions directly into machine language and this process is called compiling.
       Interpreter:
                        An interpreter translates high-level instructions into an intermediate form, which it then executes. Interpreter analyzes and executes each line of source code in succession, without looking at the entire program; the advantage of interpreters is that they can execute a program immediately.

121. What is the difference between an ADO.NET Dataset and an ADO Recordset?
